The British representative at Peking telegraphed
that on June 19th the situation in the international
settlement in Shanghai was unchanged, but that the
shipping situation was worse.
On the night of June 18th a mob threatened the
northern boundary of the settlement, and a European
police sergeant was seriously injured.
The negotiations for the settlement of the Shanghai
trouble between delegates of the Chinese Goverment and
representatives of the diplomatic body in Peking failed owing to the Chinese presenting demands with which the European delegates were not competent to deal. The settlement of the question has consequently returned
into the hands of the diplomatic body in Peking which
has announced that it is ready to negotiate at onde
with Chinese Government on the subject.
At a meeting of the diplomatic body, ita Doyen, the Italian Minister, emphasised the necessity of solidarity amongst the powers, and firmness towards Chinese, who
are inclined to use the situation to extort concessions
unconnected with recent eventa.
